Kara Walker: Silhouette

Kara Walker employs drawing to confront history and prejudice. A figure is drawn with white pencil on black paper, cut out, turned around, and collaged upon a wall in silhouette. These subversive figures interact with one another in unexpected and surprising ways.  The viewer's shadow too joins the parade of figures implying their association in the narrative.  This work is a wonderful ode to the simplicity, directness, and power of drawing to express the human spirit and stir the latent emotions and energies that dwell in the silent corner's of our mind.
