de Chirico: Subversive Perspective
I was recently looking at the paintings of de Chirico as we were moving through a unit on linear perspective in one of my drawing classes. I've always appreciated his paintings but one of the things I had never thought about in detail was his intentional use of multiple perspectives. It doesn't hit you over the head like cubism does but he's clearly using multiple perspectives to serve his artistic vision. He knows how to use linear perspective accurately should he choose to but he's not interested in that. He's being rebellious by simultaneously thumbing his nose at the technique while also using it to create a sense of depth. He's subversively using it while undermining it. Here are some mockups that I made to illustrate these observations.
