Nicole Eisenman: Portraits
The portraits of Nicole Eisenman are a case study in how one artist can many styles - pushing and pulling their own boundaries and reassessing their comfort zone. Asking oneself "I wonder what would happen if I..." and then pursuing that thought with complete focus and and followthrough. This also brings to mind being okay with discomfort and questioning what is good and what is bad drawing and/or painting. Making room in the studio for both the lofty and the base - the high brow and low brow. In other words, pursuing beauty but also allowing ourselves a safe space to explore bad ideas or what might, at first, seem like a bad idea. There needs to be a safe space in our art-making for making "dumb" art. Perhaps, through it, there is a gateway to new vistas and realms of exploration. We must be fearless in the studio without worry of judgement (from ourself or others).
