Exploring The Boundaries of Art & Science

Influence of Digital Technology

In this post I'd like to consider how artists use or are informed by technology. I'll do this by considering how we might define or categorize technology.

Analia Saban from her exhibition Punched Card (installation view at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery). The paintings above were created by laser cut/sculpted paper pressed into surface of printers ink. The weightlessness of a digital file takes on the physical weight of a monolith.

Here is an additional video of Saban describing her practice.

Austin Lee has always used a wide range of technology to inform his paintings, especially drawing on a phone or other digital tablet. In the video above he discusses using an robotic drawing device.

William Kentridge is constantly looking for ways to push his art in new directions. Here he explores the use of anamorphic projection combined with time-based video projection.

Traditional Medicine & The Mind At Large

Whereas many of the artists in this post explore the exterior world, Ernesto Neto delves into the inner contents of the mind. Here he discusses the influence of traditional techniques of healing and meditation as an influence for his artwork.

The Image of the Natural World

Vija Celmins finds her inspiration in the faithful rendering of the profound detail of the natural world.
