A quick note on abstraction

Left: Jackie Gendel / Right: Tara Donovan

Every representation is an abstraction. A drawing, painting or photograph is merely an abstraction of reality. The degree of abstraction in large part has to do with scale (of imagery and marks) and perspective (from the more to the less familiar). Abstractions can be defined as either representational (of some thing from the known world) or non-representational (claiming to reference nothing but the materials used to create it).
